What is the cornea?
Similar to the windshield of a car or the crystal on a watch, the cornea is the clear, dome-shaped structure that forms the outermost layer of the eye. It covers the pupil (black circle in the center of the eye) and iris (colored part of the eye). Along with the natural lens, it focuses light onto the retina to form sharp images. If the cornea becomes scratched, dry, cloudy, or irregular, significant vision loss and pain can occur.
